Internal linking is one of the few SEO levers a site controls completely — no algorithm dependency, just deliberate architecture.

The core rules
- Every supporting page should link back to its pillar page
- Pillar pages should link out to every supporting page in the cluster
- Related posts across different clusters should cross-link where genuinely relevant
- Avoid orphaned pages — every page should be reachable from at least one other page
Why it matters more than ever
Both crawlers and AI systems use internal links to understand which pages a site considers authoritative on a topic. See the full framework in content strategy. More in SEO Fundamentals.
