Every SEO decision eventually runs through one screen: the Google Search Console Performance report. It is the only first-party record of the queries that surfaced your pages, yet it is routinely misread — averages hide bimodal rankings, CTR shifts with SERP features rather than titles, and the visible rows are a sample, not a census. This guide explains what each metric actually counts, the filters that matter, and the analysis workflows that survive scrutiny.
The Four Metrics, Honestly Defined
The Performance report tracks four metrics: clicks (a user left Google for your page), impressions (your URL appeared in a viewable position for a query), CTR (clicks divided by impressions), and average position (the mean of your topmost result position across all impressions). Each has counting rules that change how you should read it.
Impressions count when your result appears on a loaded page of results — position 8 on a page the user never scrolled still counts. Average position takes the topmost position your site held for each impression, then averages across every query the filter includes. That is why a page ranking #2 for one query and #45 for twenty others shows an “average position” of 40-something: the number is arithmetic, not a rank.
CTR is the metric most sensitive to things you do not control: an AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a set of ads above your #3 result can halve CTR with zero ranking change. Filters and Dimensions That Matter
The report offers six dimensions — query, page, country, device, search appearance, and date — plus a search-type switcher (Web, Image, Video, News, Discover). Almost every real analysis starts by combining two of them: a page filter with the query list, or a query filter with the page list.
Filtering to a single page and reading its queries shows you what Google thinks the page is about — often not what you intended, which is a content-strategy signal covered in our Content Strategy pillar. Filtering to a single query and reading pages exposes internal cannibalization: two URLs alternating for one query usually means neither wins consistently.
The most underused filter is search appearance, which isolates rich results, videos, and translated results. And the most powerful filter is custom regex — brand vs non-brand splits, question-word isolation, long-tail buckets — which gets its own copy-paste pattern library.
Analysis Workflows That Find Real Wins
Three repeatable workflows produce most of the value: the period comparison (what changed and where), the striking-distance list (queries at positions 4–15 worth a content push), and the CTR-gap check (pages whose CTR underperforms their position). Each takes minutes once you know the clicks.
Period comparison: use Date → Compare, last 28 days vs the previous 28, then sort the query and page tabs by click difference. Split brand from non-brand first with a regex filter — brand queries track your reputation, non-brand tracks your SEO, and mixing them buries real movements. Striking distance: filter positions 4–15, minimum a few hundred impressions, and you have a ranked to-do list — pages one content improvement away from meaningful clicks. Strengthening those pages usually means better coverage of the query intent plus internal links from strong pages, the same levers described in the SEO Fundamentals pillar.
CTR gap: for each position band, compare a page’s CTR against your site’s norm at that band. A page at position 3 with position-8-level CTR has a snippet problem — title, meta description, or a SERP feature eating attention. Check the live SERP before rewriting.
Where the Report Misleads You
Four systematic distortions: anonymized queries (low-volume and privacy-filtered queries are counted in totals but hidden from the query list), the row cap (the UI shows 1,000 rows per table), averaging artifacts (bimodal positions look mediocre), and data lag (the last 2–3 days are incomplete).
The practical consequences: your query table’s clicks will not sum to the total (the difference is anonymized queries); a site with many long-tail pages needs the API or bulk export to see past row 1,000; and any “traffic dropped yesterday!” panic should wait three days for the data to finalize. Google’s own documentation on debugging search traffic drops is unusually honest about reading these charts.
One more: the report only covers Google. Bing’s equivalent lives in Bing Webmaster Tools with its own guidelines, and your visibility in AI surfaces needs the Generative-AI performance report plus direct testing across assistants.
Exports, History, and Limits
GSC keeps 16 months of Performance data. If you want year-over-year comparisons beyond that, you must export — either scheduled exports to Sheets, the Search Console API, or the bulk data export to BigQuery. Start exporting monthly now; you cannot backfill later.
For most sites, a monthly CSV of the query and page tables is enough insurance. Larger sites should treat the bulk export as infrastructure: it removes the row cap entirely and enables the brand/non-brand and directory-level analyses that the UI cannot do. Frequently Asked Questions
Why don’t my query clicks add up to the total?
Google hides anonymized queries — very-low-volume and privacy-sensitive searches — from the query table while still counting them in the totals. The gap between the table sum and the chart total is normal and typically largest on sites with heavy long-tail traffic.
What is a good CTR in Search Console?
There is no universal number — CTR depends on position, query type, brand strength, and which SERP features appear. The useful comparison is internal: your own pages at the same position band. A page far below your site’s norm for its position has a snippet or SERP-feature problem worth investigating.
Why did impressions rise while clicks stayed flat?
Usually one of three things: you started ranking for new queries at low positions (more impressions, few clicks yet), an AI Overview or other SERP feature began absorbing clicks, or a ranking improved from page 3 to page 2 — visible, but still rarely clicked. Segment by query and check positions before concluding.
Does the Performance report include AI Overviews?
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are folded into the standard Web search totals, but the dedicated Generative-AI performance report Google launched in June 2026 breaks out AI-surface impressions separately. Use both: the main report for totals, the AI report for your generative-search baseline.
How far back does Search Console data go?
16 months in the interface and API. Anything older exists only if you exported it — set up a monthly export now if year-over-year analysis matters to you, because there is no way to recover history you never saved.

The Performance report rewards discipline and punishes skimming. Define the metrics correctly, split brand from non-brand, work the striking-distance list, and treat CTR anomalies as SERP questions before title questions.
